Epic’s new look and renewed resolve

CEO John-Son Oei shares insights on Epic’s journey so far, and how we plan to keep pushing forward.

The earth is currently supporting 7.4 billion human lives — double the world population in 1970. And we’re still growing, with the United Nations estimating a population of 9.8 billion by 2050.

While some might celebrate the growth, most view this with much fear. Understandably so, especially as we look around us and notice the destruction resulting from the rapid growth affecting our ecosystem.

Our current observations make it easy to compare humans to cancer, where it is in our nature to destroy. And if more of us exist, the worse off the world would be.

But my journey with Epic has taught me otherwise.

Since our first project almost 9 years ago, my cynical mind was changed after so many people willingly signed up to spend a weekend to do good for strangers in a strange place.

This was what piqued my fascination towards making it as accessible as possible for people to come together to impact their communities.

Through the years, my team and I have discovered that deep inside every one of us, we want to live purposeful and meaningful lives that make a positive difference. What holds us back is just a lack of know-how and the crippling feeling that comes when we think that our individual effort wouldn’t make a difference.

Epic’s very existence, growth and success have been a testimony that when given the opportunity, people always choose to do the extraordinary to impact their communities.

We believe that this energy, when intentionally harnessed and directed correctly, could change the world for the better. Just as people have become a collective force of destruction before, I truly believe that people can reverse this and become a collective force of good.

This is what fuels me every day and is exactly why Epic exists.

Every component of Epic, from its companies, platforms and technology, fits together intentionally to form an ecosystem to serve the purpose of making collaborative social impact accessible.

That is what is required for us to change the gloomy path that humanity is on right now. Because I don’t believe that change will come simply by volunteering for one weekend. The change we need can only come by fundamentally changing the way we live.

That is what our new logo is about, symbolising openness and trust, giving to the world, and in turn receiving an epic story to share, told through the lives of extraordinary people impacting communities.

At this point we are but one small fish in a big pond. However, we have always believed that when many small fish band together, we can make a huge ripple.

We hope you are inspired to join us on this journey. Hopefully then, together with our future generations, we can all look to the future with much more hope and courage, with faith in each other to work towards shaping the world that we want to live in.
